The Shul School meets weekly at Stepping Out Studios, 37 West 26th Street (between 6th Avenue and Broadway).

Learning together is one of the hallmarks of The Shul of New York, so we offer a once-a-week afterschool program for children (The Shul School) that runs through the school year as well as interesting adult education (The Shul School for Adults).  Both of these ongoing programs incorporate the Shul’s Essential Teachings.

The Shul Of New York Essential Teachings

  • Torah and Teaching: The Torah is our most important Jewish book but it was written with an ancient people’s concept of myth and history. We need to search the text to find personal ways in which the struggles, decisions and risks of the characters who appear in the text can ring true for us today.

God is Mystery: Understand God is a lifelong task and God is always a mystery.

Egalitarianism: We are committed to gender equality and egalitarianism.

The Soul: Having a spiritual and moral center is crucial to our development as people. Acting in kind and loving ways allows us to feel our soul.

Inwardness and Outwardness: Internalizing class material, embracing the change that teachings engender and displaying what has been learned through outward actions is the aspiration of The Shul of New York’s educational programs across the age span.

The Class as a Community: Whether with children or adults, we strive to create a learning community where mutual respect comes from a place of friendship and shared commitment to one another.
