Shul Program and Events Details
The Shul of New York’s Martin Luther King Jr. Havdalah
Saturday, January 21, 5:00 – 7:00 PM
Stepping Out Studios: 37 West 26th Street, 9th Floor
In the same season when Jewish people read in the Torah about how the Hebrews
were delivered from slavery in Egypt, we
also celebrate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. who led the civil
rights movement for freedom and equality for ALL citizens in
America. A wonderful new tradition is starting at The Shul of New
York: A Family Havdalah in of the life of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Come learn how MLK was accompanied and inspired by Rabbi Abraham
Joshua Heschel, another leader in the civil
rights movement.![]()
The separation between the Shabbat and the rest of the week is marked by Havdala, a beautiful, short service that prepares us for the week ahead. When we celebrate together with song, fragrant spices and candlelight, we can cherish the sweetness of Shabbat and be ready to engage fully in the week to come. Rabbi Burt and Adam Feder will lead us through the Havdala service and a renewing guided meditation.
The Shul of New York is grateful to Marla Hamburg Kennedy for the use of her penthouse space for the 5771 Havdala services.
Shabbat Dinner and Torah Schmooze
A monthly get-together
On the second Friday of each month, sign
up to have dinner in a reasonable local restaurant and then to learn
from Rabbi Burt and discuss the Torah portion of the week. No
prior knowledge is necessary and it is a great way to meet other
Shul of New York congregants. Order and pay for what you
choose from the restaurant’s menu and contribute toward the tip.
Space at some restaurants is limited, so early reservations are
recommended.
You will receive confirmation of your
reservation.![]()
