The Shul in
the World
We take seriously our contribution to tikkun olam,
repairing the world. We believe that it is important to gather as a
community to give. The Shul of New York’s social action initiative has
two dimensions: organizing activities that raise money for charity and
arranging opportunities for groups of Shul members to volunteer their
time to offer a hand to local service organizations.
In the past, we have: done the annual AIDS walk, helped
to build a house with Habitat for Humanity, refurbished schools with NY
Cares, contributed to Dress for Success, and more.
Upcoming opportunities:
1/29/10 Do
You Eat Food?
Join members
of the Shul of New York's Shul in the World initiative and fellow
congregants for a lively talk on Jews, food and contemporary issues in a
comfortable, at-home setting. We'll hear from Barbara Lerman-Golomb,
the Director of Education of Hazon, the Jewish environmental
organization. According to Lerman-Golomb, "Powerful educational moments
arise when contemporary food issues are placed in context of Jewish
tradition. Consider how food is a deep seeded part of the Jewish
tradition. Eating local is a Jewish value." Learn more about Jews,
Food and Contemporary Life and how you can be part of the New Jewish
Food Movement. The program is part of the Shul's Fifth Friday
programming, and is free. Pre-registration is required.
