Conversations in Spirituality

A series of salons to explore spirituality in our daily lives.

Join Rabbi Eva and the Shul community for Conversations in Spirituality as we explore spirituality through the lens of practical wisdom drawn from Jewish tradition, sources and practices. Learn a little, discuss a lot, and meet new people as you explore new spiritual practices to integrate into your daily life.

In a relaxed, salon setting, we will discuss various approaches to improving the quality of our lives by living in a more spiritual, engaged way.

Each 1½ hour session will include opportunities for learning, discussion and meditation.

No experience in Jewish text or practices is required. Simply come with an open heart and mind.

February 21: Why be Spiritual?

We start with the most basic question: Why be spiritual? Jewish spirituality can be an approach to life in which we strive to become more engaged with our spiritual nature in the course of our day. We will discuss how our tradition offers us ways to lead a more meaningful, purposeful life.  UWS location - Location details in confirmation email.

March 7: The Art of Praying (Cancelled)

Have you ever sat in synagogue and thought, what does this all mean? Like many of us, you may have wondered about the meaning of the liturgy. We will explore the basic structure of liturgy and how to attune prayers to what flows naturally from our hearts. Try it….you might like it!  Location TBA.

March 20: The Art of Blessing
(This session will include some of the previous session's content.)

What is a blessing? Why bless? We will learn the blessing formula as we discuss the ways that blessings may be used to enhance our lives and the lives of others. Greenwich Village location - Location details in confirmation email.

April 4: The Art of Mitzvot

What are the mitzvot? Are we obligated to perform all 613 in order to be considered a worthy person? (Spoiler alert: Not really.) We will discuss ways to integrate mitzvot, good deeds, into our daily routines. As the saying goes, ‘the more you give, the more you get!’  Location TBA.

April 18: The Art of Wordless Melodies ~ Niggunim

Music is an integral aspect of our community prayer at The Shul of New York. Judaism regards music as life enhancing, for where there is a song, there is a prayer. Through chant and singing niggunim (wordless melodies) we can create possibilities to transcend the mundane and enrich our inner spiritual life with no or few words. Location TBA.

May 2: The Art of Jewish Mindfulness ~ A Gateway to Gratitude

The world is abuzz with Mindfulness Practices. Jewish mindfulness meditation can be a path that supports and sustains our lives and the fulfillment of our values through an enhanced awareness of ourselves and the world around us. We will explore meditation practices that can help us appreciate the miracle of being alive.  Location TBA.
